Corvo sends 'Canes past Panthers in OT
Hockey Betting Lines
12/18/2008 - Raleigh, NC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Joe Corvo scored on a sensational individual effort with 44 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 2-1 win over the Florida Panthers in a Southeast Division matchup from RBC Center.
Corvo took a pass from Ray Whitney at the top of the slot and wound up for a shot, but fell to the ice after making contact with a Florida defender. He recovered, though, and skated the puck into the left circle, cutting between two defenders, before lifting a backhander past Tomas Vokoun.
Justin Williams netted his first goal since November 23 of last season while Whitney notched two assists for Carolina, which posted back-to-back wins for the first time in nearly a month. Cam Ward recorded 19 saves for Carolina, which last won three in a row from November 16-21.
Four of Carolina's last six games have gone to overtime, allowing the 'Canes to pick up points in six straight despite splitting those contests.
Rod Brind'Amour assisted on Corvo's game-winner for his 700th NHL assist. He became the fourth active player to have at least 700 assists and 400 goals -- joining Dallas' Mike Modano, Tampa Bay's Mark Recchi and Colorado's Joe Sakic.
Cory Stillman registered the lone goal for Florida, which ended its five-game road trip with consecutive losses after a three-game winning streak.
Vokoun stopped 35-of-37 shots from the 'Canes and took the hard-luck loss. The Panthers are now 8-10-1 as the visiting team this season.
Carolina started things with a power-play goal in the first after Jay Bouwmeester was called for hooking. Whitney fired a pass down low to the left of the net for Williams, who walked out in front and slid the puck past Vokoun into the far corner of the net with 5:08 remaining.
The 'Canes kept the pressure on in the first and throughout the second, but Vokoun stood tall in keeping it a one-goal game, making 15 saves in the first and stopping all 12 second-period shots -- with a little help from the post on a Whitney shot in the latter frame.
Ward, meanwhile, wasn't seriously tested but turned back all 13 shots he faced through two periods.
However, Florida was able to solve Ward 2:29 into the third. Stillman took a pass from Kamil Kreps in the neutral zone and broke in on net showing forehand, before switching to the backhand and flipping the disc through the legs of Ward.
Vokoun was perfect again with seven saves in the third and the Panthers were the aggressors down the stretch, but Ward was able to withstand the pressure and send the game to OT.

Albert Pujols to be This Year's Home Run Champ Says Online Sportsbook
Barry Bonds is a 50-1 long shot to be this year's home run champ odds. The favorite to be this year's home run champ is none other than Albert Pujols, however.
Now that Barry Bonds is signed and in Giants camp, it is on to his pursuit of all of sports most prestigious records: the all-time home run mark. Bonds sits just 21 homers shy of tying Hank Aaron for the career mark at 755. Word out of Giants’ camp is that Bonds is the healthiest he has been in a few years. Bonds is just two seasons removed from his injury riddled 2005 campaign where he played in only 14 games and hit only 5 home runs. He did come back last year and had a solid season hitting .270 with 26 bombs. All eyes will be on Bonds this spring and summer not only because of his home run chase but his highly publicized steroid abuse allegations. If and when Bonds breaks the record, he surely will not get the positive attention one should for breaking a record that was once thought of as “unbreakable”. Despite Bonds decent season last year, he is just 50-1 at MySportsbook.com to lead the MLB in long balls this season.
Not surprisingly, the favorites to go deep the most times this season are Albert Pujols 5-1, Ryan Howard 6-1, David Ortiz 8-1 and Alex Rodriguez 12-1. With 49 homers, Pujols finished second in the National League behind Howard (58). Pujols is considered the favorite due to the consistent power numbers that he has posted since breaking into the league in 2001. Also one must consider the fact that he played in 16 fewer games then Howard did due to an injury. Howard smashed 58 homers in his first complete season of big league play en route to the National League MVP odds award. He silenced his critics by successfully hitting left-handed pitching. Howard also displayed the ability to use his power to the opposite field. Two attributes which should keep Howard amongst the league leaders in long balls for years to come. From the American League representatives, David Ortiz leads the field. Ortiz was second in the majors last year with 54 home runs. Except for 1999 when he only played in 10 games, Ortiz has improved on his home run numbers each year he has been in the majors (1997).
