WPS suspends 2012 season

01/30/2012 - San Francisco, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Women's Professional Soccer announced on Monday that the league will suspend the 2012 season as a result of its ongoing dispute with a former owner.
The WPS Board of Governors voted on Monday to suspend the season in the hope that it will resume play in 2013.
WPS terminated its South Florida franchise in October after a season-long dispute with owner Dan Borislow, and a Florida judge ruled this month that the league did not follow its dispute procedures when it terminated the franchise.
The ruling has resulted in a lengthy and expensive legal battle with Borislow, which has forced the league to divert considerable financial resources into litigation.
"We are proud of what the league has accomplished in the first three seasons, but we do recognize the necessity to resolve our existing legal and operational issues so that we can continue to support and grow WPS the right way," said Sky Blue FC owner Thomas Hofstetter. "This was a very difficult decision, but one we as owners feel is the best business decision for the league at this time."
WPS has played three seasons since its inception, but needed a waiver from the U.S. Soccer Federation to be sanctioned as a first-division league in 2012 since it only had five teams, which is three short of the required eight.
Under terms of the agreement with U.S. Soccer WPS will increase its number of teams to a minimum of six for the 2013 campaign, while at least eight will be in place for 2014.
